August 1 through 15  It’s time for the 10th annual Share A Haircut program.  For every child that gets a haircut at the Hair Cuttery, the store will donate a cut to a disadvantaged child in the community.  Check with your local store to find out if it is participating.  Hair Cuttery officials say they have donated over 350,000 haircuts since the program began.

Now through August 21  The Visions America organization is now accepting staff positions for its summer camp program as well as accepting applications for youth aged 6 to 14 years.  The 10-week program boasts of field trips, free meals and lots of fun and activities.  Call Sharon Wilson for a schedule, registration and fees information at 410-901-9131.

Now through August 27  It’s Blackwater Paddle and Pedal Adventure Kayaking Adventures time for ages 6 to adult.  Explore the rivers of Dorchester County and learn flat water kayaking and local wildlife and history.  The adventure begins Monday, June 15 from 9 am to 12 noon and runs until Thursday, August 27th.  For details call 410-901-9255.

Now through August 31  The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Salisbury University, will be offering free admission with a donation of school supplies.  These donations will be given to Wicomico County Title One schools for the benefit of area school children.

Now through September 1  Easton Elementary School announces that Pre-K is being offered to any child living in the Easton school district.  If your child is going to be 4 years old by September 1st, please consider Pre-K.  Kindergarten registrations are in progress as well for any child who is going to be 5 years old by September 1st.  Call 410-822-0686 Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 4 pm for more information.

Now through September 30  SHORE UP! Inc.’s Early Head Start program is recruiting pregnant women and parents of children ages newborn to 3, including disabled children, in Dorchester County for in-home services at no cost to qualifying individuals.  Call 410-901-2015 for more information.

Now thru October 15  The Main Street Farmers’ Market, features fresh local produce, meats, cheese, bread, herbs, plants, and more. Look for Butter Pot Farm, Harris Farm, S.B. Farms, Well’s Berry Farm, and others. The market runs every Thursday, 3:30–6:30pm, near the corner of Academy and Muir Streets.

On going  The Dorchester Center for the Arts, 321 High Street in Cambridge has launched “The Art 520” campaign to raise funds for the organization to help offset state budget cuts.  The Center asks 500 people to donate just $20.  The fundraising goal for the project is $10,000.  Everyone who contributes to the campaign will be entered into a drawing for prizes.  Stop in the Center to pick up a donation form or call 410-228-7782.

August 2-6  Countryside Christian Church will be having Vacation Bible School at 6:30 to 8:30 pm nightly. August 5  The South Dorchester Folk Museum in cooperation with the Dorchester County Historical Society will present a free program in its oral history series entitled “Historic Handsell House”.at 7 pm in the Robbins Heritage Center in Cambridge.  Call John Neild for more information about the program at 410-228-6175.  Reservations are not needed.

August 5  St. Joseph’s Jousting Tournament and Horse Show will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cordova with the horse show beginning at 9 am.  Jousting starts at 1 pm.  Gate charge is one dollar per adult.  Dinner starts at 11:30 am and priced at $12 for adults and $6 for children.  For information, call Mike Boyle at 410-822-6915.

August 5  The Veterans Recognition Committee will meet at 6 pm at Pleasant Day Adult Day Care Center, Rt 16 in Cambridge.  Everyone is welcome in planning the 11th annual tribute to our vets in September.

August 5, 7, 8  Bring your gently worn, outgrown children’s clothes to the YMCA, 201 Talbot Avenue in Cambridge during its first annual YMCA Back to School Clothing Swap.  You’ll receive a ticket for each bag of clothing you bring.  Then on Friday August 7th, YMCA members will have a chance to select their clothing, one ticket per bag.  Children’s clothing only, sized infant to 16.  On Saturday, the community may select their clothing at $5 per bag.

August 6  Family, friends, professionals and parents of deaf and hard of hearing children are invited to a discussion meeting from 7 to 8:30 pm at 806 Snow Hill Road in Salisbury.  The meeting is sponsored by Deaf Independent Living Association.  The meeting will allow networking between other parents by sharing ideas and find alternative solutions for issues related to hearing loss in children and youth.

August 7-9  Deaf Independent Living Association, Inc.’s Camp Adventure 2009, an overnite summer camp for deaf and hard of hearing children 5 thru 17 will be held at Camp Pecometh in Centreville.  Registration is on a first-come first-serve basis.  Limited scholarships are available.  Call 410-742-5052 for more details.

August 8  Cambridge Second Saturday featuring gallery openings, late shopping hours, entertainment and fine and casual dining options.  It’s from 5 to 9 pm in downtown Cambridge.

August 8  A free family fun day is planned at the Tuckahoe Steam & Gas Association grounds on Rt 313 from 9:30 am to 8 pm for Wade Sharp’s family in order to raise money for Wade”s hospital expenses.  Wade was seriously injured in a farm trucking accident on July 11th and is in the Univ of Maryland Shock Trauma unit for a indefinite period of time.  100% of the funds collected will be donated to Wade’s benefit fund at Easton Bank and Trust.

August 9-12  It’s a Kids Krusade at the Souls Harbor Church of God, 718 Peachblossom Avenue in Cambridge from 6 to 9 pm Sunday through Wednesday.  The free event is for all children ages 3 through 12.  There will be door prizes, games, praise and worship, life changing messages, special guests, snacks, crafts and much more.  Call 410-221-0860 with any questions.

August 9  Sunday afternoon would be a good time to Praise in the Park….Sailwinds Park in Cambridge, that is.  St. Paul’s Praise Band will entertain from 3 to 5 pm.  Admission is free but a love offering will be taken.  The donations will benefit the Cambridge Christian Academy Foundation

August 15  Channel Marker’s Summer Celebration…an all you can eat crab feast fundraiser…will be held at the Easton Club Pavilion from 5 to 9 pm.  There will be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle.  Buffet served from 6 to 8 pm.  Open seating and table reservations can be made with an 8 to 10 group ticket purchase.  Seating is limited; $60 per person or $65 at the door.  Children 10 and under $15.  Call 410-822-4619 for ticket information.

 August 15  Check out the C and J Car Show from 10 am until 2 pm in the WalMart parking lot in Cambridge.  Registration entry fee is $10 with judging at 12 noon;  trophies will be awarded at 2 pm.  All proceeds will go to Coastal Hospice; free admission to the public; food and drinks will be on sale.

August 17  Save the date for the 2nd annual Divots for Dogs golf tournament fundraiser benefiting the Dorchester County Humane Society.  The event will be held at the Hyatt’s River Marsh golf course.  Shotgun start at 9 am.  Just $100 per golfer.  There’s a great goodie bag, and prizes as well as hole-in-one prizes. August 17  The Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting at 7 pm at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills to discuss the proposed late waterfowl seasons and bag limits which will be announced in early August.  The public can comment on those proposals at the meeting.

August 18  The Maryland Capital Enterprises will host an outreach for small minority and women-owned businesses from 1 pm to 3:30 pm on the Univ of MD Eastern Shore campus in Princess Anne in the Richard A. August 18  Be sure to not miss an ice cream social given in honor of Susie Price and Frank Stout, outgoing principal and vice principal of Sandy Hill Elementary School in Cambridge from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the school.  The event will also combine as a welcoming party for incoming principal and vice principal Michelle Ruark and Marybeth Glessner.

August 19  New merchandise has arrived at the Holly Center’s Canteen Boutique, 926 Snow Hill Road in Salisbury and will be on sale from 11 am to 1:30 pm.  The Boutique has mens, womens and childrens’ apparel, watches, tote bags, earrings, scented candles and much more.  Proceeds of the sale will benefit the Holly Center residents and staff.

Saturday

August 22  Wings-N-Wheels featuring aircraft, cars, motorcycles, and boats.  Live entertainment and food.  It’s all taking place at the Cambridge Regional Airport on Bucktown Road in Cambridge.  Rain date is Sunday, August 23rd.  Call 410-221-8009 for more details.

August 22  Free outdoor summer concerts on the lawn continue with the gospel folk fun and praise of “Peter’s Voice” at the Atlantic UM Church on 4th Street in Ocean City.  The concert starts at 6 pm so bring a chair or blanket to the church lawn between Baltimore & Philadelphia Avenues.

August 29  The VFW Riders will host the 4th annual Bobby Ray Davis P.O.W./M.I.A. Rememberance Day Run.  Sign up at the Dover Air Force Base AMC Museum located at the Rt 9 entrance from 9 to 11 am.  The fee per bike is $20.  There will be one ceremony starting at 10:30 am at the AMC Museum to honor our P.O.W./M.I.A.  All proceeds will benefit the Delaware Monument.  For pre-registration, email to powmiarun@gmail.com
