Now through July 30  Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio along with the National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association will team together for their 13th annual Bill of Rights $3,000 Essay Scholarship Contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors.  For more information and how to enter the contest, call Delegate Haddaway’s office at 410-820-8043.

Now through July 30  Applications are now being accepted for organizations wishing to apply for The Community Arts Grants program.  The deadline is Friday, July 30th.  These grants are an allocation of the Dorchester Center for the Arts as the designated Dorchester County Arts Council, and monies are to be used for arts programming.  Visit the DCA on High Street in Cambridge during normal business hours or call 410-228-7782.

Now through July 31  The Town of Easton will be doing extensive road repairs to the area known as 5 corners. There will be lane closures, road closures and no parking at various times. Please try to use alternate routes and avoid the area.

 Now through August 6  Waugh Chapel UM Church, 425 High Street in Cambridge will participate in the Summer Food Service Program as part of its Summer Youth Enrichment Program.  Program hours will be from 8:30 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday. All children will be accepted regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.  A USDA approved breakfast and lunch will be served.  For information and to register, call 410-228-5189.

August 10 through August 31  Dorchester Center for the Arts on High Street in Cambridge will present “Photography for Beginners and Beyond” for four weeks beginning Tuesday August 10th.  Sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays.  This class is suitable for those needing a refresher course, wanting additional help, or seeking instruction. Now through August 13  Free summer meals for children and teens are being offered on a first come first serve basis at Visions America Community Development Corporation on 403 Washington Street in Cambridge.  Breakfast serving time starts at 7:30 am with lunch time beginning at 11 a.m.  Limited space for only 30 children.

 Now through August 14  Tickets are now on sale for the 31st annual Seafood Feast-ival to benefit the Rescue Fire Company.  The ever-popular affair will be held Saturday, August 14th from 1 to 6 p.m. at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge.  Live music will be provided by Golden Touch; there will be a “Kids Corner” and a car show.  To order tickets, call 410-228-1211 or visit www.seafoodfeastival.com

 Now through August 25  Need funding for a heritage tourism project?  This is your chance!  Apply for the Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area mini-grant program.  Applications are due by August 25th  Organizations may apply for up to $5000.  For complete details, contact the Dorchester County Tourism Dept. at 410-228-1000.

Now through August 28  Western Sussex Farmers’ Market will be open Saturday mornings 8:30 am til noon.  The Market will be located on the Boys and Girls Club property at 310 Virginia Avenue, Seaford, Delaware.  In addition to fresh local produce, there will be educational and fun activities each week.  Find the Market on Face Book.

 Now through September 30  The Mid Shore Community Band is currently preparing for its second season of music, fellowship, and fun.  Membership is open to all adult musicians in the Mid Shore area.  Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings in Easton from 7 to 8:30 starting in August.  The band has openings in all sections.  For more information on joining, go to www.mscb.org or send email to info@mscb.org

 Now through October 31  The Cambridge Main Street Farmers Market brings local farmers to downtown Cambridge every Thursday afternoon from 3 to 6 pm.  A mix of familiar and new vendors will be at the market this year.  Keep up to date on all the market happenings at www.cambridgemainstreet.com

The public can view the model of the Frederick Douglass statue planned for the Talbot County Courthouse lawn.  The model is on display at the Talbot County Visitors’ Center, 11 S. Harrison Street in downtown Easton from 8:30 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday. 

Every Tuesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dorchester General Hospital, 300 Byrn Street in Cambridge will offer free blood pressure screenings in the hospital’s main lobby.  It is sponsored by the Hospital Auxiliary.  No appointment is needed.

The Gift Shop at the Memorial Hospital at Easton raises money that funds healthcare programs and services offered across the Mid Shore region.  The Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm.  For information about becoming a Hospital Auxiliary volunteer, call 410-822-1000, ext. 5839.

The Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital sponsors a free hypertension screening clinic four days a week at the Shore Health System Diagnostic and Imaging Center located at 10 Martin Court in Easton.  Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Thursday from 9 am to noon except holidays.  No appointment or physician referral is necessary.  Blood pressure results will be forwarded to the patient’s physician when requested.  For more information, call 410-820-7778 ext. 135.

 Free job seeking skills’ classes for Maryland deaf and hard of hearing residents are being held monthly through September 2011, Monday thru Friday 10 am to 2 pm for 4 weeks at Deaf Independent Living Association, 806 Snow Hill Road in Salisbury.  Classes are taught in ASL.  Transportation is available upon request.  To register, call 410-742-5052.

The Robin Hood Shop, operated by the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, is located at 416 High Street in Cambridge.  Shop hours are Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.  Volunteers accepted donations of gently-worn men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, fashion accessories and small housewares.  To make a donation and/or find out how to volunteer, call 410-228-6339.

 Day and evening breast cancer screening appointments are available at Shore Regional Breast Center at the Memorial Hospital, 219 S. Washington Street in Easton.  The screenings are open to uninsured or underinsured women, aged 20-39 and over 64 who meet income guidelines.  To schedule an appointment, call 410-820-9400. 

July 26-28  The Zion UM Church, 612 Locust Street in Cambridge is holding its Vacation Bible School from 6 to 8 pm nightly.  Those attending will be treated to a special pool night.  For more information, call 410-221-1397.

July 27  There will be a start up meeting for the Dorchester County Co-Ed Softball League at 6:30 p.m. at the Dorchester County Recreation & Parks Board Office, 446 Willis Street in Cambridge.  All interested teams should send a representative to this meeting to discuss league scheduling, election of officers and possible rules changes.  Any questions, call 410-228-5578.

 July 27  Forget about cooking dinner and come out to support the Cambridge Ballet Company on its 5th anniversary at Snapper’s Restaurant from 6 p.m. until closing.  Music starts at 8 p.m. and will be provided by the Johnnie Watusi Band.  The management of Snapper’s Restaurant is kindly donating a substantial percentage of the night’s proceeds to the nonprofit Cambridge Ballet Company.

 July 27  A fundraiser will be held to benefit a memorial fund for Kyle Henn, a Delaware native who was killed in explosions in Uganda. The event will begin at 8 p.m. and end at midnight.  The place is the Public House in Wilmington which will donate a dollar for every drink sold. The fundraiser will feature a silent auction and raffles.  Proceeds will go to Invisible Children a nonprofit that works to provide education to youths in northern Uganda affected by war.

July 30  Tuckahoe State Park in Queen Anne is holding a one night Adult Only Adventure.  Come out and enjoy Tuckahoe State Park’s Challenge Course at 6 p.m. which features a 40-foot Rock Wall, a 25-foot pamper pole and a 50-foot giant swing.  Pre-registration is required.  The cost is $20 per person.  To sign up or for more information, call the Park office at 410-820-1668.

July 31  The Somerset County Fair will hold its annual horse show at the Somerset County Fairgrounds on Crisfield Lane in Princess Anne.  Show starts at 8 a.m. with registration at 7 a.m.  The show will be held rain or shine.  Cash will be awarded for the first 5 places in each class.  July 31  Kitty City Rescue, Dorchester County’s newest cat rescue, will host a flea market (no pun intended!) at St. Paul’s UM Church, 205 Maryland Avenue in Cambridge from 7 a.m. to noon.  It’s a morning filled with bargains, baked goods and beverages.  There’s even several raffles.  Vendors..bring your products.  Rent a table or space for just $10.  Contact Peggy at 410-228-7755 to sign up for a space or to donate items.

August 1  The Cambridge VFW Post 7460 on Sandy Hill Road will be serving an all you can eat breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Everyone come and enjoy!  Adults $8 per person; kids half price.  Questions?  Call 410-228-7460.

 August 1  The Preston Vol. Fire Company will serve an all you can eat breakfast from 7 am to 10 am in the firehouse.  Adults $7; children under 12 $3 and kids 3 and under eat for free.

August 2 –6  The Dorchester YMCA will sponsor a Boatworks Camp from 1 to 4 p.m. for 9 through 12 year olds at the Ruark Boatworks, Hayward & Maryland Avenue in Cambridge.  The fee is $50 for Y members and $75 for non-members.  The camp will expose campers to lots of nautical information and will include a wood working project that each child will get to take home.  Call 410-221-0505 to register or for more information.

August 3-5  Worcester County authorities want residents to be prepared in case of a natural disaster.  Three workshops will be held this month to teach residents to create an action plan in case of emergency.  Each will be free to the public with Q & A sessions afterwards. On Tuesday, the workshop will be held at the Bishopville Vol Fire Dept.; on Wednesday at the Showell Vol. Fire Dept. and on Thursday in the Assateague Room at Ocean Pines Community Hall.  The workshops will run from 7 to 9 p.m.

August 3  Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Delaware is offering free health education classes for adults.  The program is focusing on helping adults manage diseases like diabetes and heart failure.  The first of 4 classes begin August 3rd fro 5 to 7 p.m.  The others will take place August 10th, 17th, and 24th.  Registration is required; call 302-645-3337 or online at www.beebemed.org

 August 3   The 27th National Night Out will be held from 5 to 8 pm at the Fruitland Little League Complex.  The event is free and will include music, food, firetruck rides and more.  The night is to help promote the fight against gun crime and violence.  The nationwide event is expected to attract over 34 million people across the country.

August 4  St. Joseph’s Jousting Tournament & Horse Show will be held at the church in Cordova.  The horse show starts at 9 am and the Country Ham and BBQ Chicken Dinner begins at 11:30 a.m.  Tickets are $12 for adults and children under 12 just $6.  Jousting starts at 1:15 p.m.  The gate charge is one dollar per adult.  Raffled prizes will be awarded throughout the day.  For more information, call Mike Boyle at 410-822-6915.

August 6-8  The Eastern Shore Threshermen & Collectors Association will be holding its 50th annual Wheat Threshing, Steam & Gas Engine Show at its showgrounds located on Rt. 313 between Denton and Federalsburg.  The show features free admission and free parking and opens at 10 am each day.

August 7  The 33rd annual Pine’eer Arts and Crafts Festival will take place on White Horse Park in Ocean Pines from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Over 125 artists and crafters from all over the Eastern Seaboard will display their handcrafted items.  Free admission and free parking.  Ocean Pines is located on Rt 589 between Routes 50 and 113.  White Horse Park is 1.5 miles inside of the North entrance to Ocean Pines.

 August 7  Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge is seeking new volunteers and will be conducting a series of volunteer training sessions in August to folks who are interested in helping out at the refuge.  A workshop will be held from 8:30 am to 4 pm in the Visitor Center Conference Room to update all new and experienced volunteers on current events at the refuge.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided compliments of the Friends of Blackwater.  For more details, call 410-228-2677.

August 16   The Dorchester Humane Society will host its 3rd annual Divots for Dogs Golf Tournament for its second big fundraiser of the year.  Registration begins at 8 a.m., although the Society would prefer you to pre-register.  The shotgun start is at 9 a.m. on the River Marsh Golf Course at the Hyatt-Regency in Cambridge.  There will be prizes, a hot lunch and free beer.  It’s all sponsored by the Maryland Shore Pet Resort.
