Now through March 18  The Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area is seeking nominations for its annual Heritage Awards.  The awards honor individuals, projects, and organizations that work to preserve and promote the area’s rich heritage.  Nominations will be accepted until Thursday, March 18th at 4:30 pm and awards will be presented at the annual Heritage event in May.  For more details, contact Linda Cashman at the Dorchester County Dept. of Tourism Office, 2 Rose Hill Place in Cambridge, or call 410-228-1000. 

Now through March 23  The Grasonville Senior Center, 4802 Main Street, is offering ballroom dance classes Tuesdays from 1 to 2:30 pm.  The instructor is Anne Marie Duld.  The registration fee is $15.  You must be 60 or over to take this class.  Call 410-827-6010. 

Now through March 27 A seven-session Hunter Safety Education Class is scheduled for March 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, and 27.  The weeknight classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  On Saturday, March 27, the class will run from 9 am to 1 pm.  All classes will be held at the Thendara 4-H Center on Lord’s Crossing Road near Hurlock.  Ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian.  The cost for the 7 sessions is $10.  Call the 4-H office at 410-228-8800 to enroll.

Now through March 27  The Census is currently recruiting individuals in Worcester County to participate in this nationwide project.  For at least a 6-week period, census takers could earn $13 an hour along with a mileage reimbursement of 50 cents a mile.  The hours of operation would not exceed 40 hours per week.  To work as a census taker, you will have to pass a test.  Worcester County will be holding the exam at the Pocomoke and Snow Hill libraries through the end of March.  Call 410-726-0717 for dates and times. 

Now through March 27  The Dorchester Center for the Arts will showcase the work of its students and instructors in a variety of media,  The Student and Instructor Gallery Show will run through Saturday, March 27th.  More than 80 works have been submitted and are available for viewing and some can be purchased during normal business hours. 

Now through April 12  SHORE UP! Inc. is offering free tax preparation of both state and federal income tax returns.  To qualify, persons must have a total household income for 2009 under $49,000. Residents must set up an appointment by calling 410-749-1142, ext 330 on weekdays.  There are two locations: 510 Snow Hill Road in Salisbury and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Second Floor of the Student Development Center in Princess Anne.

Now through April 15   The AARP Tax-Aide Volunteers will again be providing tax counseling, preparation of Federal and Maryland forms and electronic filing free of charge at the Dorchester County Library in Cambridge.  The free service will begin Thursday, February 4 and continue each Thursday and Saturday through April 15th.  Hours are from 10 am to 1:30 pm.  Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are strongly recommended.  Call the library’s Adult Services at 410-228-7331.

Now through May 4 The Harrington Delaware Police Dept. will be holding its Citizens Police Academy.  The Academy offers participants an opportunity to learn more about the daily operations of the police dept. and experience conditions similar to the training they receive.  This will be a 12-week course that will focus on the different aspects of police work.  The Academy hours will be 6 to 9 pm.  If interested call Ruth Peterman at 302-398-4493.  Space is limited and participants must be 21 or older.

ON-GOING EVENTS

The public can view the new model of the Frederick Douglass statue planned for the Talbot County Courthouse lawn.  The model is on display at the Talbot County Visitors’ Center, 11 S. Harrison Street in downtown Easton from 8:30 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday. 

The Dorchester Humane Society has a pet food bank for people who need help feeding their pets.  Just stop at the shelter at 4930 Bucktown Road in Cambridge during hours of operation. Winter hours are: Tuesday through Friday 1 to 5 pm and Saturdays 11 to 4.

The Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) in partnership with Delaware State Police will provide its car seat inspection services at Troop 7 in Lewes every other Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm.  Services are also provided at the DMV in Georgetown. To set up an appointment, call 302-853-1014.

The U.S. Census Bureau will rely on thousands of temporary workers to help complete the count of every person that resides in the country.  Households will receive their 10-question questionnaire in the mail between March 15-17th.  The Easton census bureau is now hiring census takers to follow up at residences which do not return their 2010 census form..  If you’re interested and have some free time throughout the week, call 1-866-861-2010 to apply.

The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s office is expanding its Auxiliary Deputy Unit.  The program is strictly a nonpaid volunteer position and requires a commitment of 16 hours monthly, mainly on the weekends.  Auxiliary deputies are involved in many of the same assignments as paid deputies.  To apply, stop by the Sheriff’s Office at 505 Railroad Avenue in Centreville and pick up an application and a list of requirements.

All customers of Chesapeake Utilities and Sharp Water living on Delmarva qualify for a $600 Sharing Grant to help the elderly, ill and financially strapped during the cold winter months.  Customers over the age of 60 are eligible for the grant.  Applications are available through Catholic Charities in Delaware and Shore Up! The Gift Shop at the Memorial Hospital at Easton raises money that funds healthcare programs and services offered across the Mid Shore region.  The Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm.  For information about becoming a Hospital Auxiliary volunteer, call 410-822-1000, ext. 5839.

A fallen Georgetown Delaware police officer is being honored with a new scholarship.  The Ronald G. Williams Foundation has started the “Officer Chad Spicer Heroes Scholarship”.  The funds are available to area high school seniors who are pursuing an education in Criminal Justice.  Students interested in the scholarship should speak with their school guidance counselors for more information.  The deadline to apply is May 31st.

Catholic Charities of Delaware needs to stock its pantry!  The cold weather has taken a toll on the food distribution programs in Milton, Wilmington, and Princess Anne, MD.  “Stock the Pantry” is a food drive which will continue for the next several months.  Officials are asking the public to drop off nonperishable food items.  There are several drop-off locations in the area.  To find out a certain location near you, call 1-302-655-9624.

March 5  The Talbot Figure Skating Team invites the public to enjoy its free 2010 Spring Figure Skating Exhibition held at the Talbot County Community Center beginning at 5:30 pm.  Watch synchronized skating teams comprised of juvenile figure skaters from across all of the Mid Shore counties. 

March 5   Help Habitat for Humanity build more homes in Dorchester and Talbot Counties!  A fundraiser will be held from 6 to 8:30 pm at the Tidewater Inn in downtown Easton.  Come out and enjoy good food and drink, a nice array of silent and live auction items and the chance to hear firsthand from Habitat homeowners about the difference Habitat is making in their lives. March 6  The Dorchester County Historical Society will present the 3rd program in its History Comes Alive series, “Native American Snapshot” from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. March 6  The Mardela Springs Vol. Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary is having a fundraiser which will incorporate a soup and sandwich buffet from 11 am until sold out at the fire house, 100 Station Street in Mardela Springs.  There will also be a bake table with March 20th Gun Bash tickets on sale.  Eat in or carry out.

March 6  The Chicone (SHA-CONE) Ruritan Club will hold its annual steak dinner at the Vienna Community Center on Race Street from 3:30 until 6:30 pm.  The dinner raises funds for the Chicone Ruritan Scholarship Program which is offered for seniors at North Dorchester High School.  The cost of the dinner is $12 for adults and $6 for children 5 through 11, and free for kids under 5.  Meal tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance through the Hebron Savings Bank in Vienna or any Chicone Ruritan member.

March 5-7  The 8th Annual Books Café will take place in the Wye Parish Hall of St. Luke’s Chapel, Main and Dudley Streets in Queenstown.  Over 10,000 books, all sorted by author or subject will be sold at 90 percent off the cover price.  Meals and snacks will be served all 3 days.  Contact Mary Campbell in the Wye Parish at 410-827-8484 for times and more information on the event.  

March 7  The deadline to donate Girl Scout cookies through the “Operation Taste of Home” program is (today) Sunday.  The USO sends the cookies to American soldiers out of Dover Air Force Base.  Community service groups here on the Shore will also get the cookies.  Those who wish to donate cookies through Operation Taste of Home can do so by calling the Cookie Hotline at 1-800-986-9862.

March 9  Local boaters will have to take a new course on marine safety and laws this year.  Anyone born after July 1, 1972 has to pass an approved course to operate recreational boats and jet skis in Maryland.  The Ocean City Power Squadron will offer the new 8-hour boating course.  The first class will be held on Tuesday, March 9th at the Ocean Pines Branch of the Worcester County Library. 

March 9  Mothers of Preschoolers will meet at 9:30 am at the Zion UM Church, 612 Locust Street in Cambridge.  Mothers of infants to age 5 are welcome for conversation, refreshments, and fun activities.  Free childcare is provided.  Call 410-330-4427 for more details.

March 12  Come out and chow down at the Buffalo Bill’s Western BBQ dinner at 5:30 pm to 7 pm at Cambridge South Dorchester High School.  Cost for adults $8; carryouts available from 5 to 7 pm.  There will be various silent auction items offered during the dinner. Among the items is a pair of Canvasback decoys by Gary Marshall, 3 months membership to the YMCA, and Longaberger items to name a few. Tickets purchased for the February 12th spaghetti dinner which was cancelled due to weather will be honored at Buffalo Bill’s Western BBQ.

March 12  Sandy Hill Elementary School, 1503 Glasgow Road in Cambridge, will be holding its annual spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 pm.  The dinner includes salad, bread, drink, and dessert for $8.50.  Children ages 4-12 just $6 and kids under 3 will eat free.  Carryouts will also be available.

March 12-14  The 2010 Lewes (Del) Polar Bear Plunge is an annual charity event that supports Special Olympics Delaware.  The Plunge Festival Weekend will be held Saturday through Sunday.  The 5k run is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday; the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

March 12-14  Saints Peter & Paul Middle School, 900 High Street in Easton, will present “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr.”, an 18th century fairy tale comes to life Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. with a special Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.  Adults $7, students $5. March 13  The Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 White Hall Road at Route 50 in Cambridge will serve a lasagna dinner which includes bread and a salad.  Desserts are extra.  Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 4 – 12.

March 13  Two Rehoboth Beach businesses have rescheduled their Haiti fundraiser after getting snowed-out.  Azura Clothing and Hobo’s Restaurant will be co-hosting “An Afternoon of Fashion and Food” to benefit “Doctors Without Borders”.  The organization is currently in Haiti helping the survivors.  The gourmet luncheon and fashion show will be from noon until 3 pm.  For more information, call 302-226-2226.

March 14  The East New Market Vol. Fire Company will be serving an all you can eat breakfast from 7 am to 10 am at the fire house.  The cost for adults is $6, children 6 through 12 $3 and kids under 6 will eat at no charge. 

March 14  The Hurlock Vol. Fire Company will again hold an all you can eat beef and dumpling dinner from 12 noon to 3 pm.  Cost for adults is $10 but seniors will pay $9; children 5 – 12 $6 and any child under 5 will eat free.  Desserts are available for sale.

March 14  The Bob Johnson Jazz Quartet will perform at the Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge at 4 pm.  Admission is $10; students can get in for free.  There will be a reception after the concert.

March 16  As a service to private landlords and realtors, the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a Landlord Training Program focusing on Applicant Screening, Rental Agreements, the Role of Police, the Eviction Process, and several other topics.  Two sessions will be held at the Holiday Inn Express in Grasonville.  The first will be two evenings, Tuesday, March 16 and Thursday, March 18th from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.  The second one day class will be held on Saturday, April 17th from 8 am to 3 pm.  The cost is $15 per person.  To enroll, call Stephanie Jones at the Sheriff’s Office at 410-758-0770 ext 1218.

March 17  Beckwith UM Church will have a St. Patrick’s Day dinner from 5 to 7 pm in the Neck District Firehouse, Rt. 343, Hudson, 11 miles west of Cambridge.  The cost of the dinner will be $10 per person and will benefit the repair and painting of the church windows. The menu includes corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, biscuits and a beverage.

March 17  St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 303 South Main Street in Hurlock will serve its annual St. Patrick’s Day Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner from 4 to 7 pm.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 7.  Carryouts will be available.  Call 410-943-3320 for the menu and information. 

March 17  The Empowerment Center will hold a fun Bingo fundraiser at 7 pm at 615-B Pine Street in Cambridge beginning at 7 pm.  Admission is $10 and the package includes Bingo cards, prizes and a snack.

March 18  Delaware Technical & Community College’s Terry Campus is hosting an open house from 5 to 7 pm in the Education and Technology Building, Room 727.  The event will inform attendees about majors that are available, financial aid, athletics, student activities and more.  Those who attend will also have the opportunity to win Delaware Tech logo items. March 19-21  The Home, Condo, and Garden Show plus the Arts & crafts Fair will be held at the Ocean City Convention Center, 40th Street and Coastal Highway beginning Friday at noon and wrapping up on Sunday at 4 pm.  More than 300 exhibitors will display unique products for home, condo, and garden.  Artists will display creative crafts and gifts.  Call 410-213-8090 for times and more information.

March 19-21  The 17th annual Charity Antiques Show and Sale will be held in the Waterfowl Festival Building on Harrison Street in Easton Friday evening through Sunday afternoon.  Antiques, fine art, linens, silver and jewelry are available all weekend.  Call 410-822-0444 for show times and additional information.

March 19  The Eastern Shore Senior Provider Network (ESSPN) will hold a networking event at the Londonderry Retirement Community, 700 Port Street in Easton beginning at 8:30 am with check-in and followed by breakfast.  Shortly after 9 am, Steve Bailey, communications consultant for Talbot County, will speak on “Effective Public Relations”.  The talk is free to current ESSPN Members and $10 donation at the door for nonmembers.  Seating is limited, so call Sandra Early at 410-643-6288.

March 20  Enjoy “An Evening with Frederick Douglass” at the historic Avalon Theatre in Easton.  Actor/Educator Fred Morsell performs Frederick Douglass in character and words at 6 pm.  There will be musical entertainment from Sombarkin’, a silent auction and light fare.

March 20  The Cambridge Sail and Power Squadron will hold a beginner boating safety course at the Church Creek firehouse beginning at 8:30 am and ending at 4:30 pm.  The cost of the course is $30.  The course is designed for boaters using all types of watercraft.  For more information, call George Seifert at 410-397-8811. 

March 20  The Fairview Church of the Brethren will host a Hope For Haiti benefit concert at the Talbot County Auditorium at 7 pm. The concert will feature several local well-known Christian music groups.  A free will offering will be taken during the concert.   

March 21  The Jackson Street Church of God in Cambridge will be having its 3rd Annual Founders’ Day program beginning at 3 pm.  The guest speaker will be Pastor Urshell Chase.

March 22-26  Preston Elementary School is holding its Spring Book Fair during the week of March 22-26. Hours are: Monday 9 am to 4 pm; Tuesday & Wednesday 9 am to 5:30 pm; Thursday 9 am to 4 pm; and Friday 9 am to 11 am.

March 25  There will be a volunteer orientation session for crew, administrative & maintenance personnel for the skipjack, “Nathan of Dorchester” at 5:30 pm at the Dorchester County Airport.  Light refreshments will be served.  Pre-registration is requested.  Call 410-770-9410.

March 27  The Dorchester Center for the Arts will hold a Master Design Class, which is a comprehensive class for the interior decorating novice.  The class will be held at the Center from 9 am to 4:30 pm and will be led by Joseph Paul Davis who owns a design school in Palm Beach, Florida.  The course fee is $175 for the day-long session.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Center.  To register call the Center at 410-228-7782.
